Australian Group Races are the highest class of thoroughbred race in Australian racing. The most recognised group races in Australia are the Melbourne Cup, Caulfield Cup, Golden slipper and WS Cox Plate, which are all Group 1 races.

Group races total over 540+ races each year which works out around 2-3% of total races held each season in Australia.

Group races are divided into 4 categories;
Group 1 - at least $250,000 prizemoney - 60+ races per season
Group 2 - at least $125,000 prizemoney - 80+ races per season
Group 3 - at least $75,000 prizemoney - 110+ races per season
Listed - at least $50,000 prizemoney - 280+ races per season

The Australian horse racing season runs from August to July each year and we have listed all the Group 1 and Group 2 races on the racing calendar.

The Schweppes Stakes is a Moonee Valley Racing Club Group 2 Australian Thoroughbred horse race for horses aged 3 years old and over under weight for age conditions. It is held at Moonee Valley Racecourse in Melbourne on WS Cox Plate day and is over a distance of 1200m.

The Schweppes Stakess which attracts quality sprinters was previously run over 1000m as the AJ Moir Stakes and Schweppervescence Stakes, but is now run over 1200 metres.

The Schweppes Stakes is a race that suits good weight-for-age horses and those which can handle the tight Moonee Valley race track.

The Gr2 Schillaci Stakes has been a good guide in previous years.
